As the name implies, Groundwork Providence is a non profit institution dedicated to “working the ground”, employing those in greatest need for landscape and urbanscape remediation projects. The project begins with a transformation of it’s site, a vacant lot on Providence’s west side. A patch of ground is elevated to find space for the program of offices and storage. A terraced “stair” connects to the newly lifted and verdant ground and a trellis system turns the masonry walls into “living walls”. The rest of the lot contains communal garden spaces and an existing educational pavilion, the aim being to provide an oasis in an otherwise hardened cityscape.
